Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984, the original TMNT was born as a parody of popular 1980s superhero tropes. It drew heavy inspiration from Frank Miller’s Daredevil and Ronin , as well as the "mutant" craze seen in Uncanny X-Men . Unlike the colorful cartoons that followed, the Mirage Comics era was dark, violent, and "wet and sticky" with New York punk energy, featuring turtles who lived in a literal "teenage wasteland" of sewer waste and decay.

The franchise has successfully reinvented itself for every generation, from the "Turtlemania" of the 1980s animated series to modern interpretations like the 2012 Nickelodeon series and the stylized Mutant Mayhem (2023) .
