On Christmas Eve, Fox Mulder convinces a reluctant Dana Scully to investigate a legendary haunted mansion in Maryland. The house is supposedly inhabited by a star-crossed couple, Maurice and Lyda, who made a lovers' suicide pact in 1917 so they could spend eternity together.

As the agents explore the decaying estate, they become trapped. The ghosts, played by and Lily Tomlin , begin a psychological game of "divide and conquer." They attempt to turn the partners against one another by preying on their deepest insecurities: Mulder’s crippling loneliness and Scully’s clinical detachment and "aberrant" need to prove Mulder wrong.
