The story follows archaeologist Matthew Corbeck (Heston), who is consumed by his search for the lost tomb of the ancient Egyptian Queen Kara. As he finally breaches the tomb's seal, his wife gives birth to their daughter, Margaret, at that exact moment.

During filming in the Valley of the Kings, an unforecast sandstorm actually struck the set during a goodbye scene between Heston and York.
