He earned the name "Boyaxçî" (Shoeshiner) because he worked as a shoeshiner for 25 years at the historic Ulu Mosque in Diyarbakır to make a living while practicing his art.
Born in the village of Lexerî in Erzurum, he later moved to Diyarbakır, where he spent most of his life.
