Yato is hired to find a lost cat named Lady. After solving a supernatural conflict involving a "Blight" (dark, corrupted spirit) in a school restroom, he successfully returns the cat.

Because Yato is a god, Hiyori survives, but the impact causes her soul to slip out of her body frequently—a condition known as becoming a "Half-Ayakashi."

Yato’s shinki (regalia/weapon) at the start of the episode, who leaves him due to his unprofessionalism.

A kind-hearted, normal high school girl who becomes entangled in the supernatural world due to her accident.

Episode 1 acts as a strong introduction to the series' unique mythology and character dynamics, blending high-stakes spiritual action with mundane human comedy. It successfully sets up the core trio (Yato, Hiyori, and later Yukine) and creates an instant hook with Hiyori's plight.

While trying to stop a cat from running into traffic, Yato is almost hit by a bus. A human girl, Hiyori Iki, sees this, mistakes Yato for a pedestrian, and pushes him out of the way, getting hit herself.

The English dub for this episode is widely praised. Jason Liebrecht captures Yato’s chaotic energy, rapid mood swings from silly to serious, and hidden arrogance perfectly. Bryn Apprill’s Hiyori strikes the right balance between grounded normalcy and the confusion of her new circumstances.

An eccentric, lazy, but surprisingly capable "stray god" of calamity who is desperate for relevance.
