Hoobadventure: Marsupilami

Marsupilami: Hoobadventure is a modern 2D platformer that serves as both a love letter to classic mascot platformers and a vibrant adaptation of the iconic French comic character. Developed by Ocellus Studio and published by Microids, the game manages to distill the essence of the genre into a polished, albeit brief, experience that appeals to both nostalgic adults and younger newcomers.

The narrative premise is simple and functional, staying true to the whimsical nature of André Franquin’s creation. Three Marsupilamis—Punch, Twister, and Hope—accidentally release an ancient ghost that places a curse on the animals of Palombia. This sets the stage for a journey across three distinct worlds: a coastal city, a lush jungle, and an abandoned temple. While the story is secondary to the action, it provides a sufficient framework for the game’s colorful odyssey. Marsupilami Hoobadventure

Visually, Hoobadventure is a standout. The art direction captures the comic book aesthetic with expressive character animations and rich, layered backgrounds. The use of vibrant colors and dynamic lighting brings Palombia to life, making each environment feel distinct. This is complemented by a tropical, rhythmic soundtrack that enhances the sense of adventure. The "Hidden World" DLC further demonstrates this artistic prowess, introducing prehistoric themes and even more intricate level layouts. Marsupilami: Hoobadventure is a modern 2D platformer that

Despite its merits, the game’s primary criticism is its length. With only 26 levels in the base game, a standard playthrough can be completed in under five hours. However, the developers at Ocellus Studio intentionally prioritized polish and team culture over "crunch" and filler content, a strategic decision that resulted in a high-quality, bug-free experience. The inclusion of the free "Hidden World" expansion mitigated some of these brevity concerns, adding ten dinosaur-themed levels that represent some of the game's best design work. Gameplay is the title's strongest suit, drawing clear inspiration from the Donkey Kong Country series, particularly the "Tropical Freeze" era. The mechanics are fluid and responsive; players can jump, roll, and use their versatile tails for grappling and attacking. Level design is focused on momentum, encouraging players to chain moves together to navigate hazards. While the base game is relatively easy—generously providing lives and health—the challenge lies in its optional content. Speedrun trials and "Dojo" levels demand high precision, offering a satisfying ceiling for veteran players who might otherwise breeze through the campaign in a few hours.
