The film depicts the expansion of the Russian Empire into Siberia and the aftermath of the Battle of Poltava, which led to the exile of thousands of Swedish prisoners to the region.

Set during the reign of Peter the Great, the story follows a young officer named Ivan Demarin. By the Tsar's order, Ivan is sent to the remote Siberian city of Tobolsk. Upon arrival, he and his regiment find themselves caught in a dangerous conspiracy involving local princes who are plotting to seize the gold of Yarkand. The situation escalates when they are surrounded by the fierce Dzugars (Zunghars) in a harsh, war-torn landscape where reinforcements are nowhere to be found.
