Elisa fell in love with Marcela Gracia Ibeas while both were training to be teachers. To bypass legal and religious bans, Elisa adopted a male identity, "Mario Sánchez," cutting her hair and wearing a suit. The couple wed at the Church of San Jorge in A Coruña on June 8, 1901.
