The story follows 17-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones), the only hearing member of a culturally Deaf family in Gloucester, Massachusetts. She spends her mornings working on the family's struggling fishing boat and her days acting as an interpreter for her parents and brother. When Ruby joins the high school choir and discovers a deep passion for singing, she finds herself torn between her responsibilities to her family and her dream of attending the Berklee College of Music.
