The musical foundation for the track was actually laid down in by guitarist Dan Donegan during the recording sessions for the album Ten Thousand Fists . Donegan felt the riff was strong but couldn't quite find the right way to complete the song at the time, so he filed the demo away in his personal archives.

Fourteen years later, while looking for material for their 2018 album Evolution , Donegan revisited his old recordings and played the riff for vocalist David Draiman. Draiman was immediately drawn to it, instantly "scatting" a melody over the music that would eventually become the song's signature rhythmic vocal style.
